Updated: Nov 25

Michal Gutman, a name that resonates with innovation and raw emotion, has recently made waves in the music world with her debut solo album, Never Coming Home. Known for her unique blend of harmony and disharmony, Gutman’s music is a darkly beautiful and inventive art-rock immersion that captivates listeners from the first note.

Hailing from Israel, Gutman’s music is deeply influenced by her surroundings and experiences. Before embarking on her solo career, she spent a decade touring and recording with her band, Whaling Snails. This experience honed her skills and allowed her to develop a distinctive theatrical and unhinged sound.

Her performances often feature a mix of bass guitar, loop station, mics, and a touch-pad synthesizer, creating a soundscape as mesmerising as unpredictable. Gutman’s music draws comparisons to artists like Kristen Hersh, Beth Orton, and PJ Harvey, yet she carves out her niche with an unmistakable style. Her ability to blend different elements seamlessly makes her a standout in the art-rock genre. “Never Coming Home” is more than just an album; it’s a journey through the depths of human emotion and experience. Each track offers a glimpse into Gutman’s world, filled with haunting melodies and powerful lyrics that linger long after the music stops.

In addition to her musical talents, Gutman is also vocal about her views on the conflict in Palestine. She desires peace and justice, emphasizing the need to cry and rage for all affected by the conflict, both Palestinians and Israelians. This is one of those examples of politics never matching people's desires. Her performances often reflect this sentiment, providing a space for emotional expression and solidarity.

Stand Alone Complex contacted her on our behalf, and she prepared an exciting playlist of her favourite tunes of the moment. Enjoy!
